How to use the EV vs petrol calculator

Enter your monthly distance, then the on-road price, efficiency and running costs for the electric car and the petrol car you are comparing. The calculator works out each car's monthly running cost (energy plus service), your monthly saving with the EV, how long it takes to recover the EV's higher price and your net saving after five years.

The charging cost makes the biggest difference

What the calculator leaves out

How long does an EV take to pay back its higher price?

Divide the on-road price difference by the monthly running-cost saving. For a driver covering 1,500 km a month with home charging, many EVs pay back their premium in three to six years.

What EV efficiency should I use?

Compact EVs typically manage about 6.5–7.5 km per unit in mixed Indian driving, midsize SUVs 5.5–6.5, and large seven-seaters around 5–5.5.

Does this include maintenance savings?

Yes, optionally. EVs usually cost less to service because they have no engine oil, filters, spark plugs or clutch. Enter your estimated yearly service costs for each car.
